The Ants Go Marching One by One

The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one,
The little one stops to suck his thumb
And they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

We had ants this summer.  Not just one or two, but as Big Man put it, "horror movie style."

I tried spray.  I tried cleaning.  I tried vinegar.  That worked for a bit.

Then I turned to Facebook.  When all else fails, ask Facebook.  Someone there knows someone or something about your problem.

The answer, Terro. That stuff is awesome!!  I am not getting paid by Terro for these comments.  They don't even know I exist (probably).  But it worked.  Now, at first, it drew the ants.  In hordes, "horror movie style."  All the first day I had the bait traps out they came, and they came, and they came.

Then just a trickle - 2 or 3 dizzy and confused ants wandering around the counter.  By lunch time on the second day there wasn't an ant to be found.  I left the bait out for 2 weeks, just in case, but after that second day, we didn't see a single one.

That was 2 months ago.

Terro.  For ants.  Momma recommended and approved (keep out of reach of children and pets).

That's A Big Cabbage

Each year, there is a seed company that sponsors a cabbage growing contest with the 3rd grade students across the state. When Princess was in 3rd grade, we tried planting her cabbage in our flower garden. Rabbits or squirrels (or something) got to it and the poor cabbage didn't even form a head. So, when Little Man got his cabbage, I didn't want to repeat that.

We talked to the kiddies "grandpa" at church and offered the cabbage to him. This is the same man that allows us to pick blueberries, pears, and apples and gives us pecans, cantaloupe, and tomatoes each summer/fall. He said he had never grown a cabbage but that he would be willing to try. Well, he did a great job!! Little Man's cabbage was HUGE!!! (and that's an understatement) It was easily the size of 4 heads of cabbage that you would get in the store. We shared part of it. Cooked part. And made coleslaw out of the remainder.

I have had enough cabbage - especially considering I don't really like it in the first place.

Anniversaries

Summer is a time of anniversaries - at least in our family.  I've noticed on Facebook many people sending out anniversary wishes.

This summer, I'm saddened to add 2 new "anniversaries" to that list.  Both are similar, but yet very different.  This summer, I will be faced with the anniversary of the death of a friend from high school and with the anniversary of the death of a sweet angel whom I've never met, but feel like I've known her forever.  The anniversaries of two deaths.  That's where the similarities end.

My friend from high school took his own life.  His wife had died about 3 years before.  It was tragic - she had complications after a fall from a cliff.  Her last words to him were, "I'll love you forever."  Long story short, he decided to wait 1,000 days after her death and if he was still grieving, he was going to end his life.  He did.  It is a terrible, tragic end to what could be a beautiful love story.

Sweet angel girl died last summer, too.  She became ill and was taken to the hospital.  Things were looking like they were going to be okay.  Then things went bad and she went to heaven to be with Jesus.  I know angel girl's mom (she is a precious friend from my childhood).  After her daughter died, I talked to her about her grief.  She said it came in waves.

That got me to thinking about our trip to the beach last September.  Chumlee LOVED chasing the waves, but she didn't like it when the waves "chased" her.  She would run screaming to her daddy when the waves would come after her.  He tried to hold her hand, but she wasn't having any of that.  Until a big wave came and she couldn't get to him fast enough and the wave knocked her down.  Big Man went to her and picked her up to carry her back to the blankets.  She didn't want that.  She still wanted to play in the water, but this time she wanted to hold her daddy's hand.  Once she had his hand, she was brave and even the big waves didn't scare her.  She waded out into the big water.  She knew she'd be safe because she knew who was holding her hand.  And she trusted him.

My friend from high school claimed to know the One Who could calm all storms, waves, and should have been holding His hand.  I'm not trying to judge him.  I don't know what I would have done.  I hope I would have trusted Jesus to see me through.  That I would have held His hand and trusted Him to keep me a float in the storm.

My childhood friend claims to know the One Who can calm all storms, waves, and she is holding to His hand.  I'm not judging her either.  I don't know what I would do.  I hope I would be like her.  I'm sure most days are tough.  I know I cry often for her little girl.  I'm sure she cries more that I do.  From talking with her, she is holding her Father's hand.  He is helping her through.  He will keep her a float.

So, this summer is filled with anniversaries.  Big Man and I celebrate 16 years of marriage.  I also remember 16 years ago my grandpa died.  Chandler and Pam celebrate 13 years of marriage.  A new baby was born yesterday to my teaching partner - that's a new anniversary for them.  It's been 4 years at the church for Big Man.  And I'm sure there are many others.

Whether it's a celebratory anniversary or a grief-filled one, I know Who's hand I'm holding.  Waves of memories come flooding in - some make me laugh, some make me cry - but through the little waves that tickle and the big waves that almost drown me, I know I'm safe.  I trust Him.

Why I Left; Why I'm Back

I stopped blogging around the time Chumlee was born. Things were crazy. I didn't realize how difficult readjusting to a baby would be. For months, we were late to everything or we started getting ready HOURS before we had to be anywhere. Blogging was just one of those things that was sacrificed as I was struggling to keep things afloat. I also had some postpartum depression and a lot of stress at work. But my postpartum wasn't that I didn't want to be around Chumlee - it was the opposite. I wanted her with me all the time. I worried about her - no matter who was taking care of her. It was awful. I still have moments where I will freak out about her and worry about something bad happening to her, but not like the first year or so of her life.

Just as I was getting things under control, the other first grade teacher left mid-year (Feb 1, 2011). That left me with all 24 children. I have taught a large class before - as a matter of fact, before that teacher had come, I had taught all the first graders. That was 2008-2009 school year.

Then I was going to get it going again. I had even posted a few videos and such. Then some sad things happened to one of my blogger friends ("friend" doesn't even BEGIN to describe the relationship I have with this crazy gal. I love her so much!!). Every time I would log in, I would look at her blog and just cry. It was hard for me to blog. Then I realized I needed to blog. It would help me.

And it has. I am still sad when I read my friend's blog. I miss her little girl. But not blogging won't bring her back and it doesn't stop the hurt and sadness. I actually feel better when blogging. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about sweet, funny K girl. I love her and I miss her. I'm pretty sure I always will.

In Need of a Miracle

I find it only slightly ironic that yesterday I posted about getting my miracle and today I learned that my prayer partner at school is in need of a miracle of her own.

This is a desperate family situation and she needs God to do a miracle for her and her children. Now. Today. Immediately.

When I asked her how I could pray, all she could say was, "From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I." (ps 62:1) She is so overwhelmed; she doesn't even know what to pray for.

She has been there for me so many times. I told her I was going to ask for your prayers too. She knows about you all and has prayed for some of you when you've had a tough time. Please pray for her and for God to grant her miracle.

Thank you!

A Miracle

I'm sure you've heard about the swine flu. It's been all the rage (if that's a way to phrase it) around here since late fall. Because of the swine flu, the hospitals have had a ban on anyone under the age of 18 from being in the hospital for visits. When I was at the OB ward being monitored when Chumlee decided to not move for almost a day, I had to take the kiddies with me and the nurses, while they were kind, didn't look too happy that I had traipsed them into the OB ward. They were nice and let them stay in the waiting room until Papa had arrived.

This ban has been a concern of mine, especially since the time of Chumlee's arrival has been getting closer and closer. In early February, I asked my dr what he thought about the ban and whether or not he had heard if it would be lifted by the end of March. He said it would take a miracle to have the ban lifted by the time Chumlee was born. He said the flu risk would most likely still be around until April or so. I told him that was fine, but that if the ban was still in place, I wanted out of the hospital as soon as possible (usual c-section stays are 3 days) - even asking to go home the next day - and I wanted a notice posted that NO ONE was to be in my room but my husband and his parents. If my kiddies could not be there, I didn't want to see anyone else. The dr agreed to send me home as soon as the spinal wore off and as long as it was at least 24 hours after delivery - if everything was ok.

When I went to school the next day, I found my prayer partner and told her that according to the dr, we needed a miracle for the kiddies to be allowed in the hospital with us when Chumlee was born. I must admit that my faith on the issue was not strong. I had just simply accepted the words of the dr and had resigned myself to the fact that the kiddies would not meet Chumlee until we got home.

Last Wednesday, one of the teachers at school told me she had seen in the newspaper that the ban had been lifted! I got online and checked the newspaper. Sure enough, there it was - the ban had been lifted. Children are allowed in the hospital!! I started to cry. I didn't realize how heavy that denial had been on my heart. I had thought I was okay with it, but it was really bothering me. Princess was so excited. I could hardly wait to tell Big Man, but he was at work and would have to wait until that afternoon to hear the good news. Little Man jumped up and down and clapped his hands!!!

I had a dr appointment later that afternoon. I was eager to tell my dr that we had gotten our miracle. However, I had to see another dr in the practice and my dr was not there. I am planning to tell him at my next visit.

When we got home that evening, Little Man went to Chumlee's room and got out the outfit he had picked out for her. He brought it to me and announced, "We are taking this to the hospital and I am putting this on her right away. And no one is going to stop me!" He was not being disrespectful, but rather, he was firmly exerting his rights as a big brother to see and help dress his baby sister. That really made me cry as I realized how the kiddies had been hurting over the thought of not being in the hospital with us.

I am so thankful for my sweet prayer partner whose faith carried me through and brought about this wonderful miracle when my faith was not strong enough!!

We have told the kiddies that we will ask if they can spend the first night in the hospital with us, if we are given a room with a couch and recliner (otherwise, we will be in a room with just a recliner and therefore no room for the kiddies to sleep). My faith is strong enough now to ask God for that big room!

So, the pictures you will be seeing in about 3 weeks will have the entire family in the hospital!!

Getting Ready for Baby - Part 3

This is the last of this series of posts (i think). After getting all of Chumlee's clothes organized and realizing what I had and didn't have, I began to get panicked. As far as I know, I have had all my showers. Now, it's possible that I'll still get a gift here and there, but unless there is a surprise one going on sometime in the next 4 weeks - we are finished. That left us with a lot of things to still get.

I had mentioned earlier that Dear Friends had taken me out to dinner and had given us some bedding and a changing table. Here is a picture of the bedding on the crib: (never mind the pack and play for now)

And the changing table, loaded with diapers :)

Getting those two items was a big relief to me! Please disregard the mess and piles of stuff everywhere. I took these pictures AFTER I had cleaned out closets this week and before I have had a chance to take stuff to the consignment shop and Christian ministries.

We still needed a few "big" items - a pack and play (which grammy and pappy were getting, but they hadn't ordered it yet - which was fine), high chair, stroller, car seat, and I kinda wanted a rocker, but with everything else, I was content without one. Plus there was the boppy I really, really wanted, and crib sheets, blankets, bibs, and burpers.

Well, Dear Friend had told me of a HUGE consignment sale in Big City that would take place in February. I signed up as a New Mom and was able to get 2 tickets to get into the sale Friday at 3pm. Fortunately, it occurred on the Friday of break. Papa watched the kiddies and Nana and I went.

We had a GREAT time. However, my morning sickness was making a reappearance, so I wasn't feeling too well. Thankfully, I had some of the white pills left from the beginning of the pregnancy and the dr said it was still safe to take them. We were able to find a pink pack and play and a boppy (i took the cover off to wash it):
A mesh bathtub and glider rocker:

a stroller (didn't take a picture of that yet), a monitor, some nursing pads,

and this HUGE pile of bibs, burpers, crib sheets, blankets, absorbed pads (so we don't have to constantly change bed sheets), and some tupperware-type containers for snacks and formula:

I feel much more prepared now, except for the fact that I have to wash that HUGE pile of cloths and such!! We still need to get a baby book and a car seat. We need a high chair, but as I told Nana and Big Man, we really don't need that right away. Chumlee will be at least 4 months (if not 6 months) before she starts eating foods and until then, the high chair will just stay in the box or will be in the way in the kitchen.

Now, we wait for Chumlee to get here :)

Clubbing

Today I learned that the mother of one of the teachers at school died yesterday morning. As I was waiting with some other teachers to comfort her and pray with her, I took a good look around at the other ladies with me. Two of them knew EXACTLY how she felt. They had lost their mothers, too. The rest of us didn't. We were all blessed enough to still have our mothers living - and healthy. The two who knew how she felt held her longer and cried harder with her than the rest of us. I thought, "I'm glad I'm not apart of that club."

I remember watching the movie, "First Wives Club." It was a funny movie about 4 (i think) divorced women whose husbands were getting remarried. Hence, the first wives part. I don't want to be apart of that club, either. And I'm confident I never will be.

Then as I read blogs, I hear of so much loss and sickness with babies and children. I get worried about Chumlee. I don't want to be apart of any of those clubs, EVER!!

But, I consider the clubs I am a part of, some good (mother of 3) and others not so good (i'd just rather not mention any of them). But either way, a few years (or months) ago, I never would have wanted to be a part of some of the clubs I find myself in now. It doesn't make those memberships any easier, but God has been with me at each club "initiation" and I've been able to take my membership and become a part of clubs that I never wanted to be in in the first place.

He gives strength just when we need it and not before. I have heard that all my life, but today it really seemed to hit home.

Some of you are "motherless." Please remember my friend and colleague. Those of you whom haven't joined that club yet, remember her too. She needs us all! And when it's my turn, or your turn, we'll be able to bear it.

From August - WOW!!!

These pictures are from Leah and they are from AUGUST!!!! Leah is one of my IRL (in real life) friends. She and her husband and Big Man and I went to the same college. Then, her husband and Big Man went on - after we were married (to our respective spouses, not to each other) - to Graduate School together. I was only a teensy bit jealous of their very nice apartment. Big Man and I lived near the dumpster - UGH!!!

Anyway, Leah and her kiddies came near to our town to visit family. So, we got together for lunch one Saturday. It was great to see her and to listen to our kiddies interact. I was still feeling sickly (this was before the doctor visit that gave me the wonderful white pills), so I feel like I look bad in this picture. Princess said she thought we looked like sisters. I hope that doesn't bother Leah :)

On the Bus, From the Pool

In the summer, the cherubs who come to school go swimming at a county pool three days a week. I always try to work on "Swim Days." That's for several reasons. One, it's an easy day - we go swimming from 1-3. The day starts at 8. Lunch is from 11:30-12:30. If you can survive until lunch, the rest is downhill. The cherubs are very well-behaved at the pool (they are well-behaved most of the time anyway). Two, my kiddies love to go swimming! Three, my kiddies are exhausted and go to bed early and sleep late the next day = win, win!!

These are some pictures I took with my phone of the kiddies on the bus coming home from the pool.

Princess and her friend (i have no idea why her friend is blurry)

Little Man (don't know what he is doing) and his friend

Little Man's eyes are so blue in these photos. I did not touch them up or anything. I don't know how to do that! There has been some discussion around here about what color eyes Baby will have. I truly don't care, but I hope Baby's eyes are blue - that way Baby will be like the others. I would be happy if Baby had hazel colored eyes like Big Man, though. (i think princess's eyes are looking more hazel and less blue whereas little man's eyes are getting bluer, or so i think.)

Worship and Praise Sunday - You Raise Me Up

This song reminds me of a dear friend and colleague who is now in Heaven - free from pain. I did not know her as well as others did at school. She was stricken with skin cancer a year after I started teaching at our school. It quickly spread and became cancer all throughout her body. Within 3 years from diagnosis, we were at her funeral. It was a sad, but happy day. She was in so much pain at the end and she talked often of going home to Heaven.

A man from her church sang this song at her funeral. It was one of her favorites! He got choked up and couldn't finish. We teachers stood and finished it with him - most of us with tears in our eyes. I can't hear this song without thinking of her and her faith and her love for the children at school.

August will be 5 years since her passing. Sometimes it seems like yesterday.

Blog Awards

I've been given a few awards lately. Thank you, ladies for your thoughtfulness. I haven't forgotten about them, just been busy.

I've been given "The Attitude of Gratitude" Award from Debra at Portrait of my Heart.

So there are a few rules to this award:

1.Put the logo on your blog or post
2. Nominate at least 10 blogs that show an attitude of gratitude
3. Link to your nominees within your post
4.Comment on their blogs to let them know they've received this award
5.Share the love and link to this post and the person who nominated you for the award.
Tell us how you've come to have an attitude of gratitude.

I really have so much to be thankful for that I could go on and on. God has been so good to our family and He has blessed me with all that I have: my husband, kiddies, home, job, family.

I would pass this on to:
Tanya at Miller Racing Family - she does a Thankful Thursday.
Susan at Adventures of a Mini Van Mom
Megan at It's a Love Dare
Elena at Elena's Garden
KBeau at Life in the Slow Lane
Rhonda at Down Memory Lane
Kasey at All That is Good
Tori at I am Don's wife
Brittany at Sweet Nothings

This award is given because Leah at Live Life Simply thinks my blog is alluring, amusing, bewitching, impressive, and inspiring!

The rule for this award... pass this along to 5 blogs which I also find, alluring, amusing, bewitching, impressive, and inspiring!

I pass this award to :
Grape News - I find her stories of her daughter very amazing and I am impressed at how much her K-girl is like my Little Man
Andrea at My Chihuahua Bites - I find her blog alluring and inspiring. She is so crafty and talented with the make-up and home decorating!
Debra at Portrait of My Heart - I find her blog bewitching (i had to look that one up). I enjoy looking at her Flashback Fridays and reading her posts. I feel "attracted" to her blog. I'm not implying, though, that Debra is a witch or casts spells :)
Megan at INfertile Myrtle - I love reading her Saturday funnies!! She is so amusing!
Brittany at Sweet Nothings - I am inspired by her and love, love, love the Worship and Praise Sundays with her!!!

I got the True Friendship Award from Megan at INfertile Myrtle. I got this in March (i'm awful, i KNOW)

The rules are to pass this on to five true online friends.

I pass this award to:

Leah at Live Life Simply

Susan at Adventures of a Minivan Mom

Tanya at Miller Racing Family

Handy Family Happenings

Grape News

This is the LAST award I have (for now). This is the Neno Award and I got it from Andrea. I am copying and pasting exactly what she said about it. I'm so lazy!!

This award serves as a dedication for those who love blogging and love to encourage friendships through blogging. If you receive the award, you are asked to share why you love blogging, share your award in a post as soon as you receive it, link back to the person who gave it to you, and distribute the award to other bloggers.

I love blogging because it serves as an outlet for me when I am frustrated (like yesterday). Blogging began (and continues to be) a way for me to journal and document our family life. I started blogging when I realized I would not be able to remember all the funny things my kiddies said, and that saddened me. I am not a crafty scrap book person and the thought of a diary just overwhelms me. The blog worked out great!! Now, I blog because someone other than my Dad and Mom actually read what I write. You all make me feel important and loved!

I want to give this award to all of you who follow me, comment to me, or just lurk around and read my blog. It's yours - take it!!! Thank you for being my friend.

Info on Carrion

Carrion is dead and putrefying flesh rottenness; anything vile. I had to know what it was based only on the word itself. No pronunciation given, no sentence, no other clue.

I do not want a harder word next week!!! I'm on a roll. Keep the easy ones coming, Handy Family!

UNC won their first round. It's Tarheel Blue for our family tomorrow. Big Man will be teaching computers at our school, so we will all be together (sort of). Duke will probably win their first round, but will most likely lose in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. I have to fill out a bracket. I haven't looked at any scores other than to know that the 'Heels won. I was picking them anyway.

Now, I need to go make supper. We just got home from t-ball (but then again, if you're on facebook, you knew that's where i was tonight) and the kiddies are out of their baths now. Big Man is at work. The kiddies are eating pancakes. I'll cook supper for Big Man and myself when he gets home in about an hour.

Okay, seriously, that's enough rambling!

Yay for Me

Look what I won! I got a gold rainbow star from Handy Family for knowing what carrion is! Yay me!!

I won a prize from Mommies Angels!

Princess and I ran 1 mile tonight after supper. My heel is pretty much better. She did a great job! I was very proud of her. She did talk a lot and I kept telling her to be quiet and she would be able to breathe better as she ran. She wants to run again tomorrow, too. This is good for her, since she is not playing ball this season.

I am still working on getting some posts scheduled. Until then, you'll have to just deal with my blabberings about my days. I promise I have a lot of funny posts and stuff to blog about - I just have to get it together.

Love Dare - a giveaway

I usually don't post giveaways here, but this is from a special blogger. Tanya from Miller Family racing, one of my blogger friends, is giving away the book, Love Dare. I've heard a lot of great things about the movie Fireproof. This book is a devotional based on (or from) that movie.

Deadline is March 21st.

Wordless Wednesday: Friends

I almost missed this week! I didn't do last week, because I'm not crafty (although, that's not a good excuse). So, head on over the French Lique and check out the details of the Wordless Wednesday there - AFTER you have viewed my pictures of "friends."

(i don't want to be cheesy or corny, but he REALLY is my best friend!)

I love Winnie the Pooh - Princess's baby room was decorated in Pooh!

This is for my mom and Pam.

Big Man and I love "Friends."

I have real life friends, but I just realized tonight that I don't have pictures of me with them (at least not digital pictures). Guess that's my new project!!

ONOMATOPOEIA

Every week, one of my blog friends does a Word of the Week post. It's a lot of fun. The word a few weeks ago was onomatopoeia. (you'll have to click the link to see what it means)

Anyway, I was telling my cherubs about this word and told them what it meant. Then I told them to go home and ask their parents what if they knew what onomatopoeia means. I had them practice pronouncing it a few times. Each time, my Aide was holding back a chuckle. I went over to her and asked her what was so funny. I was fairly sure that she was laughing at the way one of the cherubs was pronouncing the word. She was. It was Silly Girl. She was saying, "Imagonnapeeah." (which, if you need help, sounded EXACTLY like, "i'm a gonna pee-ah!")
